I must admit, after reading this I was very surprised to find out J.M. Maden is a female. This isn’t a knock by any means, but a full blown compliment. Her three characters: John, Chad and Duncan are very believable. The shared experience and emotions they are coming to grips with are extremely well crafted. One would she was actually there going through the highs and lows of recovering from their life altering wounds in the Middle East.

I found a few minor mistakes, but definitely nothing to digress from this excellent work.

This is series to watch. I believe I’ll be looking into the continuing saga.

I don't read to me military stories, but this one was pretty good. This quick read a prequel to the Lost and Found Series. The author introduces us to three Marines Duncan, John, and Chad who were all injured badly in Iraq. The wounded trio become brothers while recovering in the hospital for 7 months. Company First Sergeant Duncan Wilde, age 40, a brilliant tactician, a military strategist, and quite intelligent. Duncan must deal with the fear of paralysis, a broken pelvis, a cracked vertebra, and severe burns. On top of this, he has to deal with the rejection of his fiancée. Duncan is one confident guy and has the support of his family when the come to visit they offer him a job in the family business, which he doesn't want to do for the rest of his life. Gunnery Sergeant John Palmer who is 34 years old. John is highly trained in weapons, explosives, etc. He had no close ties to Duncan or Chad before they met in the hospital. He has no family and gets no visitors in the hospital for all those months, so he must face paralysis on his own which is sad until Duncan becomes his roomy. Gunny is not happy and he has a chip on his shoulder. Gunny curses at everyone including Duncan. Gunny is paralyzed from the waste down and can't get an erection. The third one is Sergeant Chad Lowell is the youngest of the three he's easygoing from Texas with a supportive family and a ranch just waiting for him if he wants it. Chad worries that John will take his own life as soon as he's released. Chad feels close to John because he calmed him down during a PTSD attack and also Duncan who was his company's first sergeant. We also learn how each of the men are injured. After 7 months in the hospital and start there own business Lost and Found Investigative Services. This was a heartwarming book and I can't wait to read the rest of this series. This was my first time reading this author this book was really well written.

I think the author did this right, introducing us to the characters that will be featured first, without any romance in the storyline. She gives us a chance to get into their hearts and minds, allow them to heal, accept and deal with their situations before they can let anyone else in, and before their stories can believably move forward.

The writing is detailed and vivid, not easy to read at times, but also necessary to know. J.M. Madden doesn't sugar coat the injuries that these men have, nor does she go lightly describing scenes when they flashback to what brought them to where they are now. It's raw and authentic, and unfortunately the reality for too many of our men and women in the military. You will cry with them, but also laugh. She injects humor at just the right moments, to give the reader and our heroes a little comic relief.

Yes, this is heart wrenching, but not filled with doom and gloom, there are glimmers of hope. These proud men want to move forward, have a purpose in life, stand tall again, march on, and use the skills they've learned to serve the people once again. It might be from a chair or with one less limb, their gait might not be as smooth as it once was, but no matter...they will overcome whatever life has handed them...and they will do it together!
Duncan, Chad, and Palmer meet in the hospital after they had all been injured. Even though they are all in pain, they endure what they need to do to move on. Chad is always upbeat and tries to keep up their spirits. Duncan is struggling with feeling his legs again. John is paralyzed from the waist down and is always in a foul mood. After they are all released, Duncan comes up with a plan to open a security business for wounded vets. Can he get Chad and John to join him.
This is the first book in an amazing series of how wounded soldiers find a way out in the real world and away from the war zone.
